Therefore, it is likely to be a requirement that anyone visiting from New Zealand will have to first convert their own currency into one that is acceptable.
I should point out that, when I first started visiting Egypt , back in the late 's God! Cash machines are plentiful, including at the airport. Just get LE on arrival, no changing. You will need to get US dollars or alternatively UK pounds or euros before you head off. I just got back from there a week ago and I used a combination of US currency, a Cash Passport card, and my credit card. The point of changing money costing you a bit is correct, but unavoidable because Egyptian banks will not accept the NZ dollar unfortunately.
I live in Wellington too, and I'm not aware of anyone here who will change NZ dollars for Egyptian pounds. But as noted, there are plenty of cash machines and you can just use them as they have an English option so you will be able to read it. However, it was my experience that if you were getting larger amounts of Egyptian pounds LE , they were tending to give me notes of the 50, , or LE denominations, and that's not useful when buying things, so you will have to weigh the options.
